This will be a large opening at the New Media Gallery in the Anvil Centre at New Westminster.

5600K refers to the colour temperature of a defined, white light that has become a standard in film production, used to replicate the appearance of natural light at the brightest time of day.  It is understood as both real and false: a verisimilitude, a simulacrum.

The manipulation of light in visceral, illusionary and poetic ways, the attempt to dismantle boundaries, space, structures, bodies and perception itself, the fascination with finding new languages of visual experience...all are of particular interest to the three artists in this exhibition: Carsten Holler, Gunda Förster and Elizabeth McAlpine.

5600K is curated by Sarah Joyce and Gordon Duggan.

The opening will follow the keynote by Dominic Moulon.

New Media Gallery

The New Media Gallery opened in September, 2014 and is the civic gallery for the City of New Westminster, metro Vancouver. We are a contemporary, public art gallery dedicated to developing exhibitions of leading new media artists from around the world.  We are a non-collecting gallery and cannot directly commission work.   Our exhibition development includes research, documentation and a commitment to the ongoing care and quality presentation of a diverse range of loaned works from artists,  institutions and collectors worldwide.   We present six exhibitions a year, each 8 - 12 weeks long.  NMG aspires to an international profile; we are proud to bring together the work from various periods by significant established artists, as well as new work by emerging artists.

The New Media Gallery is committed to promoting knowledge and understanding and encouraging an ongoing love of contemporary art through:

- developing innovative, engaging and diverse exhibitions

- intensive audience engagement in the first two years: developing arts literacy, sharing a conviction about the importance of art & culture in the community

- building authentic relationships with the artists represented, the lenders and all our audiences

- engaging regionally, nationally and internationally to promote the artists in our exhibitions and the gallery

The New Media Gallery is located in a new, 84,000 square foot Arts & Culture Centre. The building is built to a LEED'S Gold Standard. Our flexible gallery space ranges from 2000 sq ft > 3000 sq ft (186 m2 > 279 m2)    The Anvil Centre also houses a museum & archives, community art gallery, 364 seat non- proscenium theatre, art studios, rooms available for gallery screenings and lectures. Gallery support spaces include: various holding, storage and preparation/workshops, crate storage and two loading docks.
