Sophie-Carolin Wagner

RIAT - Research Institute for Arts and Technology
Board of Directors
Vienna, Austria
Sophie-Carolin investigates elaborately, works passionately, quotes vigorously, writes peripatetically, communicates epistemologically, but not exclusively insightfully, holds as many degrees as names and never signed up to Facebook.

She lives and works as in Vienna, currently as researcher at the Artistic Technology Research Lab, co-editor of the Journal for Research Cultures and board member of RIAT – the Research Institute for Arts and Technology.

Her artwork was among other places exhibited in Portugal, Russia, United Kingdom, Austria, Japan, France, Croatia and Canada. Her writing was published in continent. Journal, Journal for Research Cultures, ISEA 2015, ICLI 2014 and in various art catalogues. Her book based on her dissertation and the herein produced artwork titled „Poietry – Challenging the Improbabilities of Communication“ was published in December 2016 with deGryter publishing house.

Her work investigates the epistemological consequences for communicational processes in functionally differentiated systems, i.e. the effects on the asserted division between a system and its environment, and the contingent nature of decision-making due to increasing levels of complexity and concomitant limits of probability.

She further focuses on how New Media transforms society and individual and serves as prosthesis to extend the human body and mind. She further researches recording systems of knowledge, particularly of artists such as diaries and slip boxes to explore the methods of how to preserve and evolve this knowledge and how it is crucial to the production process.

Her approach to these areas is consistently in combination of theory and experimental-artistic practice.
