Gerald Nestler

Vienna, AT
Gerald Nestler is an artist and writer focusing on a reading of what he terms the “derivative condition” of contemporary life, in which financial(izing) strategies, methods and narratives form a world-producing apparatus that shapes the present by preconfiguring the future. At the same time, he is working on an "aesthetics of resolution" to develop potential counter-strategies which center around the figure of the renegade—a traitor within black box systems and an educator beyond their enclosures—who embodies a currently marginal and ambivalent but at the same time concrete move from mere dissent to actual change and thus opens up potentialities to revolutionize our conception of the relations between individuals, groups and institutions.

Nestler graduated from the Academy of fine arts Vienna in 1992 and subsequently engaged in an artistic fieldwork as a broker and trader. He has shown his work internationally and received an Austrian State Scholarship for Visual Art in 2003. Among others, he published Yx, an artist book/reader on finance and economy as fields of artistic research (Schlebruegge.Editor, Vienna, 2007), edited the issues 200 and 201 of Kunstforum International on art and economy (with Dieter Buchhart, 2010) and the reader Making of Finance (with Armen Avanessian, Merve Verlag Berlin, 2015). He is a practice-based PhD candidate at the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmith University of London, UK.
